The updated version of the Epirb is according to the new IMO regulations MSC471(101):2019. Epirbs installed on or after 1 July 2023 should conform to new performence standards, which means Epirbs have to be equipt with AIS (Automatic-Identification-System).
Compared with existing EPIRB, there are some new features with new AIS EPIRB.
The main features are:
a. detectable by all types of night vision devices
b. be provided with a GNSS receiver for position fixes (Note: GPS not mandatory for old EPIRB)
c. be provided with AIS locating signal
d. be provided with some means to facilitate secure hands-free carriage (e.g. for transfer to a survival craft)
When supplying an Epirb it will be programmed with vessels name and MMSI code.
